The Greyfriars Chapel: Shadows of the Past
Project Type
Interior Design
Date
January 2025
Location
Canterbury, Kent
Visiting sites associated with death, tragedy, and the macabre—offers a unique lens through which we explore history, morality, and the human fascination with the unknown. The Dark Tourism Museum at Greyfriars Chapel, Canterbury, will be a captivating space dedicated to
uncovering the city's hidden and often chilling past.
Through immersive exhibits, a carefully curated poison garden, an apothecary, and an educational conservation space focused on poisonous plants, visitors will engage with the darker narratives that shaped Canterbury. This museum will serve as a bridge between historical education and the intrigue of the macabre, drawing in visitors eager to explore the lesser- known, often overlooked aspects of history.
By weaving together folklore, crime, death rituals, and historical mysteries, the museum
will foster a deeper understanding of the past while contributing to Canterbury’s
cultural tourism. Hands-on workshops will provide an interactive way to explore these dark histories,
allowing visitors to engage with forensic techniques, historical medicine, and the sinister secrets of medieval life.
By promoting dark tourism, this project will not only attract visitors seeking an alternative historical experience but will also encourage critical discussions about the ethics of remembrance, storytelling, and preservation of the past.
